Giants in the land

Giants in the Land

Bible:Numbers 13:25-14:9

Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it” (V.30).

Reading

After being camped near Mt. Sinai for two years, the people of Israel were about to enter Canaan—the land God had promised them. God told them to send twelve spies to check out the land and the people living there. When the spies saw how strong the Canaanites were, and the size of their cities, ten of them said, “We can’t!” Two said, “We can!” What made the difference? When the ten compared the giants with themselves, the giants loomed large. But the two—Caleb and Joshua— compared the giants with God, and the giants were cut down to size. “The Lord is with us,” they said. “Do not be afraid of them” (NUMBERS 14:9). When we’re focused on ourselves and our abilities, the hard things we face can quickly become impossible. Trusting God, on the other hand, means we’re focused firstly on Him. This doesn’t minimise the issues and giants we face—but it does put them in their place. They are not in charge. They do not have the final say. What are your ‘giants’? A habit you can’t break? A temptation you can’t resist? A person at school? Your home life? If we compare ourselves with them, we will always be overwhelmed. Let’s look away from the size of our challenges to the size of the awesome God who leads us through them.

WHEN WE’RE AFRAID OF THE THINGS WE FACE,
WE NEED TO TURN TO FACE GOD INSTEAD
