Zimbabwe has a thing called friendship benches. People who are feeling down, sad or overwhelmed can go there to talk with ‘grandmothers’—older women who are ready to listen to anyone struggling with depression, known in their language as kufungisisa, or “thinking too much”. The Friendship Bench Project is being started in other places, like Zanzibar, London and New York. “We were thrilled to bits with the results,” said one Person. “Before you know it, you’re not just on a bench, you’re just inside a warm conversation with someone who cares.” This is something of what it is like to talk with God. Moses didn’t make bench but a tent to spend time with God, calling it the tent of meeting. There, “the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend” (EXODUS 33:11). Joshua, his assistant, wouldn’t even leave the tent, seemingly because he so enjoyed his time with God (V.11). Today we no longer need a tent of meeting. Jesus has brought us right into God’s presence all the time. As He told His followers, “I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you” (JOHN 15:15). Yes, our God knows us and is with us. He’s our best Helper, our closest Friend. Spend some time talking with Him today!
