A Normal Guy

A Normal Guy

Bible: 1 Samuel 16:1-7

Reading

People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart (V.7).

William Carey was a sickly boy, born to a poor family near Northampton. His future didn’t look too bright. But God had plans for him. Against all odds, he moved to India, where he brought incredible changes to the living conditions of many people, and translated the Bible into several Indian languages. He loved God and people, and did many great things for God. David, the son of Jesse, was also just a normal guy, the youngest in his family. He was a nobody, looking after sheep on the hills of Bethlehem (1 SAMUEL 16:11-12). Yet God saw David and had a plan for him. King Saul had been rejected by God for his disobedience. While Samuel was deeply saddened over Saul’s choices, God told Samuel to find the new king, one of Jesse’s sons. When Samuel saw the handsome, tall Eliab, he naturally thought, “surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord” (V.6). But God’s plan to choose a king was very different from Samuel’s. In fact, God said no to each of Jesse’s sons, except the youngest one. Choosing David as king didn’t make sense, or so it seemed at first. What would a young shepherd have to offer his country? How good it is to realise that God knows us and has His plans for us.

GOD HAS A PLAN FOR YOU.
