FIKA

FIKA

Bible: Luke 24:28-35

Reading

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks,

broke it and began to give it to them (V.30)

The coffeehouse in the town near where I live is called Fika. It’s a Swedish word meaning to take a break with family or friends over coffee and a pastry. I’m not Swedish, but fika describes one thing I love most about Jesus—the way He often took a break to eat and relax with others. Many Bible teachers say Jesus’ meals in the gospel weren’t random. At the table, Jesus lived what God had intended His people Israel to be: a centre of joy, celebration and justice for the whole world.

From the feeding of 5,000 (JOHN 6:1-13), the Last Supper (13:1-30) and breakfast on the beach (21:7-14), the meals of Jesus invite us to stop our worrying, rushing and activity. It was only when they sat down to a meal with Jesus that two of His friends even recognised Him after He came back to life (LUKE 24:30). “He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened” to their living Saviour (VV.30-31). Sitting with a friend recently at Fika, enjoying some hot chocolate, we also found ourselves talking about Jesus. He is the Bread of Life (JOHN 6:35). Let’s enjoy sitting at His table and finding out more about Him.

YOU CAN MAKE TIME TO EAT THE BREAD OF LIFE.
