Taking Cover
Bible: James 1:12-18
But as for me, how good it is to be near God! I have made the Sovereign Lord my shelter (PSALM 73:28 NLT)
When I lived in a more stormy part of the world, I knew someone who ‘chased’ tornadoes. He tried to keep as far away as possible while watching where they went and how bad they were. It meant he could call ahead to warn others if the tornado was getting too close to towns and
people’s homes.
One day a really bad tornado changed direction so quickly John found himself in real danger. But he took cover and stayed safe while it passed over him. John’s close call that afternoon makes me think of sin in our lives. The Bible tells us, “Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death” (JAS. 1:14-15).
What at first might not seem that bad can soon spin out of control and put us in real danger. But, if we turn to Him when we’re on the edge of making bad choices, God offers us the chance to take cover. The Bible tells us He would never lead us the wrong way. We can only blame our choices on ourselves. But when we “are tempted, he will also provide a way out” (1 COR. 10:13). Jesus rescues us as we turn to Him and ask Him for help when we want to do something selfish, silly or wrong. He will give us the strength to do the right thing.
Thinking it over . . .
Where have you seen Jesus changing the way you act or think or spend your time? What other parts of your life do you want to change? Why not spend some time talking to Him about this today
