Welcome
Bible: Hebrews 13:1-13
Let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the family of believers (GALATIANS 6:10).
When we went on holiday, me and my family visited a famous sports ground. The gates were wide open, and it looked like we were allowed to go wherever we wanted. We enjoyed checking out the grounds, training rooms and trophy cabinets. As we were about to leave, someone stopped us and coldly told us we were not supposed to be there. Suddenly, we felt like outsiders. It was really uncomfortable—and we left quickly!
While on holiday we also visited a church. Again, the doors were open, so we walked in. What a difference! Many people said hi and made us feel right at home. We walked out of that church service feeling like we’d been welcomed in.
Sadly, when many new people visit churches, they often feel like they are outsiders. It’s as if the church people say: “You’re not supposed to be here.” But the Bible tells us to be welcoming and kind to everyone. Jesus said we are to love the people we meet like we love ourselves, which means inviting them into our lives and our churches (MATT. 22:39). In Hebrews we are reminded to “show hospitality to strangers” (13:2). Both Luke and Paul tell us to look out for people, no matter what their needs are (LUKE 14:13-14; ROM. 12:13). And among Christians we are to love and support each other as family members (GAL. 6:10). When we welcome all people openly with the love of Jesus, we live out His ways.
To Think About…
When did you last see a new person in your church? How did you react to them? Have you ever tried inviting your friends to a church service or event?
