Real Power
Bible: Psalm 107:1-16,35-36
He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs (V.35).
I’ve always loved a good thunderstorm. As kids, whenever a storm was filling the sky—with booming thunder and buckets of heavy rain pounding down—me and my brothers would make a mad dash around our house, slipping and sliding along the way, until we were back inside,
soaked through. It was an exciting taste—just for a few minutes—of being taken over by something so powerful we couldn’t quite tell if we were having fun or scared out of our minds!
Psalm 107 describes God’s rescue of His people like a desert that’s turned into “pools of water” (V.35). The kind of storm that turns a desert into water isn’t a gentle shower—it’s a downpour, flooding every crack of dry ground with new life. And isn’t that the kind of change we want for ourselves? When we feel a bit bored and empty, or “hungry and thirsty”—starving—for the kind of lifestyle that never seems to arrive (V.5), we need something more. And when our choices or bad habits leave us feeling sad or, even, “in utter darkness” (V.10), we need more than a little change. And that’s exactly the rescue God brings (V.20). It’s never too late to give our emptiness, problems, stress or guilt to Jesus. He is more than able to turn our lives upside down and flood us with His light and life (VV.13-14).
To Pray About…
Father, help us to come to You for change and new life. Help us turn to You with our problems, trusting Your love and power to write a new story for us.
