HIDDEN AWAY
Bible: Psalm 119:9-16
Your Word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not
sin against You (V.11).
Reading
By the time I was born, my great-granddad, Abram, had already lost his sight. He was known for the beautiful wooden objects he had carved— and also as someone who could quote many verses from the Bible. He and his friend Eli would often share Bible verses back and forth. A bit of a
competitive spirit resulted in them admitting that Eli could remember more references while my grandfather could recite more verses.
Today the family often remembers Abram as “Blind Granddad”. The way he had memorised the Bible became a lifeline for him when he lost his sight. Yet why is it important that we memorise the words of God?
Psalm 119 tells us to follow God by hiding His words in our hearts and minds. Firstly, in this way, we arm ourselves when temptation comes (V.11; EPHESIANS 6:17). Then, as we think about what the Bible says, we come to know Him better. Finally, when we have His words stuck in our minds, we are better able to hear His voice when He instructs and guides us. We use those phrases of the Bible as we talk with Him, worship Him and teach or share Jesus with others (COLOSSIANS 3:16).
The Bible is “living and powerful” (HEBREWS 4:12, NKJV). Hide its words away “in [your] heart” (PSALM 119:11) where they will always be with you.
To pray about . . .
Father, the Bible is a treasure—better than anything else. I’m not the best at memorising but I do want Your words to fill my mind and heart. Please use Your words in obvious ways in my life today.
