BEAUTY IN THE CHURCH

BEAUTY IN THE CHURCH

Bible: Exodus 36:1-7
All who are skilled among you are to come and make
everything the LORD has commanded (EXODUS 35:10).

Years ago, when my parents decided to build an extension on our house, they didn’t sign up friends and family who enjoy working with power tools; instead they hired a skilled builder to create something that would work well and look good.

Things looking good in the church building, however, do not always have a high priority. Some think it’s impractical, so anything decorative is seen as wasteful. Yet that wasn’t God’s attitude when He created a place of worship for the ancient Israelites. He didn’t recruit just anybody to make an ordinary tent. He got skilled craftsmen, Bezalel and Oholiab (EXODUS 36:1), to decorate
the tabernacle with finely woven tapestries and incredibly designed ornaments (37:17-20).

I think the beauty was important then because it reminded the people of the worth of God in their worship. During the dry and dusty days of desert wanderings, they needed a reminder of God’s majesty.

If you are an arty person, then be encouraged to use your gifts to create amazing images of God’s wonder, power and love. Inspire people to praise God through your creativity. This kind of beauty in the church has always been important to God, and it still is! Beauty gives us a glimpse of heaven and keeps us looking forward to what God is preparing for our future.

To pray about . . .

God, whatever our gifts and skills are, may it inspire people to praise You. Help us show how good and amazing You are. You are deserving of all our praise. Amen.

BEAUTY DIRECTS PEOPLE TO GOD.
