CARICATURE GOD

CARICATURE GOD

Bible: Exodus 34:1-9
The LORD is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty (NUMBERS 14:18, NKJV).

Caricature artists set to draw pictures of people who are willing to pay for a funny image of themselves. Their drawings make us laugh because they exaggerate one or more of our physical features in a way that is recognisable but funny.

Caricatures of God, on the other hand, are not funny. Exaggerating anything about Him can show a mixed up view of God that people will quickly ignore because it doesn’t make sense. Like a caricature, a distorted view of God is not taken seriously. Those who see God only as an angry and
demanding judge are easily pulled away by someone who shows mercy. Those who see God as a kind-hearted granddad will reject that image when they need justice. Those who see God as an clever idea rather than a living, loving being eventually find other ideas more interesting. Those who see God as a best friend often leave Him behind when they find human friends who are more to their liking.

God shows Himself to be merciful and gracious, but also correct in punishing the guilty (EXODUS 34:6-7).

As we put our faith into action, we need to avoid only focusing on our favourite bits of who God is. We must worship all of God, not just what we like.

To pray about . . .

Lord God, You are far above my understanding. Yet You have made Yourself known to me through Your Son, Jesus. Thank You that even though You are the Almighty God, You want to know me personally.

ALL POWERFUL, MERCIFUL, WISE AND JUST IS THE GOD WE TRUST.
