THE GREATEST

THE GREATEST

Bible: Matthew 22:34-40

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your
soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest
commandment (Matthew 22:37-38)

What’s the best thing about sport? Winning? Records? Exercise? Teamwork? In one university leisure centre, a plaque offers a different view on the greatest thing in sports. It reads: “To win the game is great. To play the game is greater. But to love the game is the greatest of all.” This is
a nice reminder that sports are, after all, games to play and enjoy.

A religious leader once asked Jesus about greatness: “Which is the great commandment?” (MATTHEW 22:36). Jesus answered by challenging that leader to love—love God and love others. Jesus said, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ ” (VV.37-39).

Whatever else our trust in Jesus leads us to do, there is nothing greater we can do than to show our love—for love is what God is all about. After all, “God is love” (1 JOHN 4:8). It’s easy to be side-tracked by other stuff, like making our own way in life and trying to fit in, but our focus needs to be on the greatest thing there is—loving our God. That’s what helps us to love one
another. There’s nothing better.

What I’m thankful for . . .

Thank You, Father, that You are love. You know what it means to really care, love and serve. Help me to live this way.

THE PROOF OF OUR LOVE FOR GOD IS
THAT WE LOVE HIS PEOPLE.
