THE WONDER OF OUR WORLD
Bible: Psalm 98
Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into
jubilant song with music (V.4).
Reading
Israel’s king, David, began life outdoors as a shepherd, then spent years hiding in the rocky terrain of Israel. Not surprisingly, a great love for the natural world shows in many of his poems and songs in the book of Psalms. Many of the psalms remind us that the world around us is upheld by the personal God who watches over it.
For example, the wilderness and vast deserts show just how huge and awesome God really is. How can we not praise the One who dreamed up the many and varied animals we see, who splashed bright-green aspen trees across hillsides of grey rock and who transforms the same landscape into a snowy work of art in winter? The world, in the psalmist’s imagination, cannot contain the wonder and awe that God inspires. “Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music” (PSALM 98:4). Nature itself joins in: “Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy” (V.8). The psalms help us use the world around us as part of our praise and worship of our Creator.
Thinking it over . . .
When did you last look at the world around you or the sky above you and say thanks to God?
EVERYTHING GOOD COMES FROM OUR CREATOR.
