No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for

One fitness trainer I know doesn’t take the normal approach to new people joining his gym. If someone pays for a gym membership but doesn’t ever really show up, he won’t just keep taking their payments; he will end their membership. He says, “Save your money. Come see me in a
few months when you’re serious. My passion is not for another three month payment . . . we’re helping people to reach their goals.” He wants to train people who are actually committed.

In Luke 9:57-62, we meet three people who told Jesus they wanted to follow Him, and all received what seem to be harsh replies from Him: “The Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head” (V.58). “Let the dead bury their own dead” (V.60). “No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God” (V.62). For each person, Jesus explained the sacrifice and commitment needed to follow Him.

One Christian I look up to says that Christians need to be “ready for massive commitment and change”. Jesus doesn’t just want us to sign up to His club, but then never show up. He wants us to give Him all of our lives and to take following Him seriously, every day.

To pray about . . .

Lord, I want to be committed to You. I want to love You with
everything I’ve got. Help me change to become who You want
me to be, and to walk in Your ways

FOLLOWING JESUS MEANS GIVING HIM EVERYTHING.
