THE RIGHT JESUS

THE RIGHT JESUS

Bible: 2 Corinthians 11:1-15

For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we
preached . . . you put up with it easily enough (2 Corinthians 11:1-15:4).

Reading

The teacher started the lesson by summarising the plot of the book the class had been set to read as homework. As Jenny listened, it began to dawn on her how different this book sounded to the one she had read. Finally she had to put her hand up and admit to the teacher she had read the wrong book by accident. Although she had enjoyed it, it didn’t help her much in class—she couldn’t join in with the rest of her group as they discussed the ‘right’ book.

Paul did not want the Corinthian Christians to believe in a wrong Jesus. He explained that false Bible teachers had slipped into the church and were teaching them about a different ‘Jesus’ (2 CORINTHIANS 11:3-4). He also showed his distress that the people swallowed the lies “easily enough” (V.4).

Paul didn’t describe exactly what these phony teachers tried to pass off as truth. In his first letter to the church, however, he went over some of the key facts about the real Jesus of the Bible. This Jesus was the promised King who “died for our sins . . . was raised on the third day . . . [and then] appeared to the Twelve, and finally to Paul himself” (1 CORINTHIANS 15:3-8). This Jesus had come to earth through a virgin named Mary and was named Immanuel (God with us) to show He was both fully God and fully human (MATTHEW 1:20-23).

Does this sound like the Jesus you know? Understanding and accepting the truth written in the Bible about Jesus is important. It shows us that we are on the right path—the only Way that brings us to God today and to heaven after we die (JOHN 14:6).

Thinking it over . . .

How do I know that I believe the truth about Jesus? What might I need to
investigate to make sure I understand what the Bible says about Jesus?

BEWARE OF PEOPLE WHO TALK ABOUT A ‘JESUS’
WHO DOESN’T MATCH THE JESUS OF THE BIBLE!
