TEMPTATIONS AND TRIALS
Bible: James 1:1-15
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds. James 1:2

It can be hard to tell the difference between trials and temptations. Are they just two words to describe the same thing? Even though they can happen at the same time, there is a fine line between them.
James 1:2 tells us to rejoice when we come up against various trials, but Jesus taught His disciples to pray that they wouldn’t fall into temptation (MATTHEW 26:41). Trials are actually an opportunity for something very good; whereas temptations are always dangers to be avoided.
One preacher explained the difference like this: “Temptation says, ‘Do this selfish thing; do not be put off by the fact that it is wrong.’ Trials say, ‘Do this right but hard thing; do not be put off by the fact that it is painful.’” Temptations are an opportunity to be selfish and focus on ourselves; trials are an opportunity to trust God and focus on Him.
Every difficulty has the potential to be a temptation and a trial. Even something ordinary like homework—it is a trial to knuckle down and get on with the work in a way that pleases God; and we can easily be tempted to do a halfhearted job so we can go and do something more fun instead!
Trials, if we let them, can help us get to know God better as we trust His strength, direction and provision, rather than relying on ourselves. Giving into temptations only ever drives us further away from Him. So next time you’re up against an issue or problem, use it as an opportunity to stretch and grow your trust in God, so that “you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (JAMES 1:4).
To pray about . . .
Dear God, help me to keep my focus on You when things are hard. Protect me from all the temptations and keep me close to You.
GIVING INTO TEMPTATION WILL ONLY EVER BRING US DOWN; TRIALS ARE OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW.
