Lindsay was busily preparing for the toughest exam of her life. She was going over old exam questions to see how much she remembered and what kind of marks she was getting. She didn’t rest until she could pass every one of the previous questions. When it came to the real exam, she passed it because she had tested herself so thoroughly.
Paul told the Corinthian Christians something about testing themselves that applies to us as well. When we come to take communion at church, we should examine ourselves (1 CORINTHIANS 11:28). Any issues, any selfishness, any grudges, any selfish things we’ve done need to be admitted to God before we take the bread and the wine of communion. Why? Because as Jesus’ people we are accountable to Him. We can’t just rock up to His table without a second
thought. Communion is a place for us to remember just how, why and where
Jesus saved us from all our sin.
So how do we prepare and test ourselves? We can begin by looking at two issues: firstly, are we actually living out our love for God and for His people (MATTHEW 22:36-40)? And secondly, are we looking to please God more than anything or anyone else (6:33)?
As Lindsay tested herself in order to be prepared for her exam, we too must test ourselves so that we can come to communion ready to remember all that Jesus has done to save us—and ready to commit our lives to Him again (1 CORINTHIANS 11:29-32).
