SLEEPING MOUNTAIN

A volcanic mountain in Mexico suddenly came alive, erupting with so much power that it became one of the world’s largest active volcanoes. The 7,300-foot El Chichon giant had been quiet for hundreds of years. People assumed the volcano had gone extinct, becoming just a sleeping mountain instead.

People around us may well think the same thing about God: He is just a sleeping mountain now—there is nothing to worry about. Nothing could be further from the truth. God is fully involved in our world and our lives. And He is returning to judge the world (SEE HEBREWS 4:13). He hasn’t returned yet—but that’s not because He is sleeping, but because He has set the perfect time.
Jesus warned that His return, and the judgement He will bring, will be similar to “the days of Noah. . . People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all” (LUKE 17:26-27). Those people assumed God was a sleeping mountain, uninvolved and disinterested in their lives. Then suddenly
they were wiped “from the face of the earth” (GENESIS 6:7).

But we are not to live like this. Paul reminds us: “You know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night . . . But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:2,4).

When we are tempted to think God has forgotten about the world or that nothing is ever going to change, let’s remember what the Bible teaches us: “The Lord’s coming is near . . . The Judge is standing at the door!” (JAMES 5:8-9).
