WHAT WOULD YOU PAY?
Bible: Acts 19:11-20
When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. Acts 19:19
Reading
“How much for this train?” The seller looked up, hardly daring to hope. He hadn’t sold much that day, and he could use the money. “They usually cost £60, but make me an offer.” The customer replied, “Will you take £5?”
The guy shook his head and the customer turned away. He had spent days making the wooden toy. Is that all people thought it was worth? Five pounds? It’s fun to get a bargain, but what we pay shows what we think something is worth. Especially with God. The Ephesians were so grateful to be freed from sin that they decided to destroy everything from their past lives. “A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly.
When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas” (ACTS 19:19). That equals fifty thousand days of wages!
The ex-sorcerers could have sold their scrolls and banked the money, perhaps splitting the profits with the church. Instead they willingly paid such a high price because they knew the stuff on the scrolls was bad, and because their salvation was worth so much more. Jesus had given His life for them, and they would gladly give up anything for Him in return.
How much do you think Jesus is worth? You can tell by what you would give up to follow Him. If you have paid hard costs for obeying Jesus, then you actually have reason to give Him thanks. You have told Jesus just how much you value Him. And He will never forget it (REVELATION 22:12)!
Thinking it over . . .
What does your life show about the value you put on Jesus? What have you given up for Him? What things do you struggle to give up for Him? Why?
OUR SACRIFICES FOR JESUS SHOW WHAT WE THINK HE IS WORTH.
