NEVER ENOUGH

NEVER ENOUGH

Bible: Ecclesiastes 1:1-11

The eye never has enough of seeing Ecclesiastes 1:8

Frank Borman led the first space mission that circled the moon. He wasn’t impressed. The trip took two days both ways. Frank got motion sickness and threw up. He said being weightless was cool—for thirty seconds. Then he got used to it. Up close he found the moon boring to look at. His crew took pictures of the grey wasteland, then lost interest.

Frank went where no one had gone before. It wasn’t enough. If he quickly got bored of an incredibly unique experience, perhaps we should expect the same thing to happen to us. King Solomon, the writer of Ecclesiastes, explained that no experience can give us the ultimate joy and satisfaction we’re looking for. “The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing” (ECCLESIASTES 1:8). We may feel moments of happiness, but it soon wears off and we look for the next thing to excite us.

Frank had one cool moment, when he saw the earth rise from the darkness behind the moon. Like a blue and white swirled marble, our world sparkled in the sun’s light. In a similar way, lasting happiness comes from the Son shining on us. Jesus is our life, the only real source of meaning, love and purpose. Our deepest satisfaction isn’t found in this world—we can go all the way to the moon, yet still not go far enough. We need to look out of this world to the One who made it and citizens of heaven.

NOTHING IN THIS WORLD WILL EVER TRULY SATISFY US.
