LIFE TO THE FULL

LIFE TO THE FULL

Bible:John 10:7-15

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full (V.10).

The year was 1918, near the end of World War I, and photographer Eric Enstrom was putting together some of his most striking photos. He wanted to include one that gave a sense of fullness in a time that felt quite empty to so many people. The photo he chose showed a bearded old man sitting at a table with his head bowed in prayer. On the table is just a book, a pair of glasses, a bowl of porridge, a piece of bread and a knife. Nothing more, but also nothing less. Some might say the photograph shows the old man didn’t have very much. But Enstrom’s point was the opposite: here is a full life, one lived in thankfulness, one you and I can experience as well no matter what our circumstances are. Jesus announced the good news: “life . . . to the full” (JOHN 10:10). We totally misread this verse when we think “full” means having lots of stuff. The fullness Jesus talked about isn’t measured in what we have or what grades we get. It is all about who we are with God; it’s about the state of our heart, mind, soul and strength. Are we full of thankfulness that our good Shepherd gave “his life for the sheep” (V.11) and cares for us and our every need. This is a full life—enjoying a close, personal relationship with God—that’s possible for every one of us.

THE FULLEST LIFE IS THE LIFE THAT LIVES OUT THE
PURPOSE FOR WHICH IT WAS CREATED.
