LISTEN TO HIM

LISTEN TO HIM

Bible: Mark 9:1-8

A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him” (LUKE 9:35).

A guy in his late teens got his first car. It needed a bit of work, but he was excited about having a go. His dad was a mechanic. But he didn’t want to listen to his dad—he was more interested in listening to his friends (who didn’t know any more about cars than he did!). That guy reminds me of Peter. Jesus took him, with James and John, up a mountain to pray. As Jesus talked with the heavenly Father, “his clothes became dazzling white” (MARK 9:3). Then Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Jesus (V.4). Peter was so amazed and scared at the same time, that he started saying all sorts of weird things about building altars for the three of them (VV.5-6)! At that point, the voice of God could be heard, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him” (LUKE 9:35). In this experience, Moses and Elijah represented the Old Testament. The law was often called the Mosaic Law, because Moses brought it down from Mount Sinai. And Elijah, being the most famous prophet, represented the prophets of the Old Testament. Peter wanted to turn his attention to them, but that would have been listening to the wrong people. Jesus came to fulfil the law and the prophets (SEE MATTHEW 5:17; LUKE 24:44). The important thing is to “listen” to Jesus and focus on Him. There are many things demanding our attention. And lots of them are good. But none of them are Jesus, the One who the whole Bible points to as our only hope and Saviour. Knowing Him is our first priority, so “listen to him”.

THE BIBLE TELLS JESUS’ STORY, MAKING US
“WISE FOR SALVATION THROUGH FAITH” (2 TIMOTHY 3:15).
