Reading
Uzziah started out really well in his life with God. He had been made king as a teenager (when he was sixteen!). Despite being young, we read that “He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord . . . He sought God during the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. As long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success” (2 CHRONICLES 26:4-5). This “success” wasn’t that Uzziah had. a super easy life necessarily—but that he got to know God better and saw God
work in his life and in the nation as a whole. This meant Uzziah’s fame spread and his army grew stronger (V.8). He had 2,600 chief officers and 307,500 soldiers who helped him defeat his enemies (VV.12-13). But we then read, “After Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall” (V.16). Uzziah started to forget that God had given him success, and that he had relied on God-centred people to make wise and loving decisions. He rejected God when he burned incense in the temple, and God gave him leprosy (VV.16-19). “King Uzziah had leprosy until the day he died. He lived in a separate house—leprous, and excluded from the temple of the Lord” (V.21). We also need to listen to the warning in Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” As soon as we start thinking we’ve got things sorted and we can do stuff on our own, we’re in trouble. Jesus tells us clearly: “apart from me you can do nothing” (JOHN 15:5). Let’s make a habit of thanking God for what He’s doing in our lives and remembering how much we need Him. That will keep us from forgetting Him and just relying on ourselves
DEPENDENCE ON GOD IS HARDEST WHEN LIFE IS EASY.
