Instagram Christianity

Bible : Psalm 13

How long, Lord? Will you forget me for ever? How long will you hide your face
from me? (V.1).

When I visited Mount Rainier, one of the highest points in America, I hoped to see some amazing views. But for the entire time I was there the mountain was covered in clouds. So instead of taking pictures, I googled photos of the view instead. My holiday made me think about the way I show my Christian life to the people around me. Do I give an ‘Instagram’ view of Christianity? You know what I mean by that, right? Do I only share with other people when God answers prayer,
when I’ve got a new favourite praise song or when I’ve been doing really well at spending regular time with God? Do I give the impression that my view of God is always clear and that everything’s going really well, all the time? Because the reality is that I struggle a lot, I have big questions, I don’t always feel in sync with what God’s doing and I struggle to maintain a regular prayer life. David didn’t live out Instagram Christianity. In Psalm 13 he admitted that he couldn’t see God and didn’t understand what He was doing (PSALM 13:1). But by the end of his prayer, he could say with certainty that God was still there and still good; even though he couldn’t see clearly (VV.5-6). Christians are like people living at the foot of a mountain. They’ve seen the mountain before, so they know it exists even when clouds are covering it. When suffering or confusion stops us seeing God clearly, we can be honest with others about our doubts, rather than pretending everything is fine. But we can also have confidence that God is still there by remembering times we’ve seen His love and goodness. That’s better than Instagram Christianity.

BEING A GOOD WITNESS FOR GOD DOESN’T MEAN
WE HAVE TO BE FAKE.
