Protect your heart

Protect your heart

Bible:Proverbs 4:20-27

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it (V.23).

Reading

During World War II mathematician Abraham Wald joined the military to look for ways to protect the planes flying over enemy lines. He and his team were asked to figure out how to better armour the military aircraft to withstand enemy fire. They began by examining returning aircraft to see where they were most damaged. But Abraham Wald realised something pretty key: returning planes only showed where a plane could be hit and still survive (pretty obvious once you think about it!). The areas on the planes that most needed additional armour were the places they could see no damage. Planes hit in the most vulnerable parts—like the engine—had gone down and not made it home, and so couldn’t be examined. Solomon teaches us about protecting our most vulnerable part—our heart He says: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (PROVERBS 4:23). God’s instructions guide us through life, steering us away from
bad decisions and teaching us where to focus our attention. If we armour our most vulnerable part by prioritising reading the Bible and looking for God’s direction, we’ll be more likely to “keep [our feet] from evil” and remain strong in our journey with God (V.27). We walk into enemy territory every day (in the world around us, at school and sometimes even at home), but with God’s ways guarding our hearts we can stay focused on our mission, stick
close to Jesus and live well for Him.

KNOWING GOD THROUGH THE BIBLE IS LIKE ARMOUR
FOR OUR HEARTS.
