I’d love to live in a fully-functioning smart house. Imagine being able to control everything with your phone and your voice. You could start the shower, turn the lights on and make a drink from your bed—before even opening your eyes! Living in a smart house would give me a taste of the life of King Solomon. In his day, he had everything a person could want. He wrote, “I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure . . . [Yet] everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun” (ECCLESIASTES 2:10-11). When Solomon filled his life with luxuries, he also filled it with emptiness (V.11). When he lived for whatever he could get his hands on, he ran into all sorts of problems. Money and possessions didn’t seem to make him happy, but miserable. No matter what he had, he realised that life without God wasn’t worth living. The end of Ecclesiastes gives us Solomon’s conclusion about life: “Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgement, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil” (12:13-14). It doesn’t matter what we have now; it matters what we have when we stand before God on the final day. Will we have His unending friendship and a welcome into His home? A real dream home is any house, no matter how big or small, that is built on the wisdom of God—Jesus Christ Himself (SEE PROVERBS 24:3; 1 CORINTHIANS 1:30).
