Our black cat is called Juno. She’s a great pet and she does a good job of controlling the mice population in our house! She came from the local animal shelter—but she is more comfortable living outdoors. When we first brought her home, the staff at the animal shelter told us how to set up a good feeding routine so that Juno would quickly learn that our house was now her home. A good routine would show her that our house was where she belonged and would always have food and safety. That way, even if Juno might wander off for a few days, she would always come home at some point. If we don’t know our true home, we’ll always be tempted to wander about searching for happiness, love and meaning. To find our true home, Jesus said, “Abide in me” (JOHN 15:4 NASB). One Bible teacher explained how “abide” (like a similar word: “abode”) brings a sense of family and home. So the teacher translated Jesus’ words as: “Stay at home in me.” To really make His point clear, Jesus used the illustration of branches attached to a vine. Branches, if they want to live, must always stay at home, fixed (abiding) where they belong. There are many things, people and groups around us, offering to fix our problems or provide us with all the excitement and meaning we could possibly want. Yet none of these things ever meet our deepest needs for long. If we’re to truly live, we must remain in Jesus. We must stay at home.
