Biblical Prescription

Biblical Prescription

Bible:Proverbs 17:19-22

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones (V.22).

Reading

One family I know have a “Joke Night” every week. And the whole family get involved. If something funny happened at school that week, or one of them heard a good joke, they share it during dinner together. They have all said that laughter, and simply messing about together, is good for them and makes them feel loads better—especially during rubbish weeks. I remember reading something a Christian author wrote, “The sun looks down on nothing half so good as a household laughing together over a meal.” And this idea is even in the Bible itself. Proverbs 17:22 tells us, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” This proverb offers a ‘prescription’ to help our health and general wellbeing—allowing joy and happiness to fill us. We all need this biblical prescription. But laughter and happiness don’t just happen. They come from good, healthy relationships with others—especially other Christians. They can help us keep our bad days, bad grades or stressful school projects in perspective. Other Christians lift us up from the gloom of life, reminding us that with Jesus we have every reason to laugh and know we are well loved. Do you need more laughter in your life? Remember, even the Bible tells us to have “a cheerful heart” as we enjoy knowing God and spending time with His people.
