I AM

Bible:Exodus 3:1-15

“Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where

you are standing is holy ground” (V.5).

Reading

A friend asked me, “How many gods are there in this world?” I got out my phone to see what Google said. Let me be clear, I believe there’s only one true God. But Google gave me this clever answer: seven billion gods. There are seven billion people in this world. And everyone has (or is) their own god. The ancient Greeks worshipped Zeus, Poseidon, Apollo and lots of other gods. We do the same. Sure, we don’t have lots of statues and temples. But we still live for things like popularity, good grades, a boyfriend or girlfriend, money, the number of Instagram followers we have. These are not ‘named gods’—but they are the same thing really. It might be helpful to ask ourselves, “What is the name of the God—or god—I love most?” That’s the question Moses asked when God appeared to him: who are you? “What is [your] name?” (EXODUS 3:13). “God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am . . . This is my name for ever’” (VV.14-15). “I am” tells us God has always been, will always be and has no limits. He is the one King in the universe who isn’t dependent on anything else for His existence. He’s the Creator and Sustainer of all that exists. He’ll never change who He is. He “is the same yesterday and today and for ever” (HEBREWS 13:8). Just as God told Moses, “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground” (EXODUS 3:5), it’s vital for us to live only for God—in awe of the one, true God; and not looking for god (or gods) anywhere else. For wherever He is, that place is good. May we “worship at his footstool; he is holy” (PSALM 99:5).
