Plans

Bible: Proverbs 16:1-9

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps (V.9).

When I went to Bible college straight out of school, I started out on a course for young church leaders. I could picture myself preaching and leading a church just as my home church pastor was doing. Then, after hearing inspiring stories from missionaries who shared the good news of Jesus all over the world, I even thought about giving my life to an overseas mission. But God had a different plan for me. The opportunities He gave me were in Bible teaching—but mostly in writing. He is using the gifts He gave me, but not how I had expected. Most of us have plans. We think ahead and dream about what we might do in the future and what life might look like. But in most cases things don’t go as planned. Some doors close, while others open. If this happens to you, it may be that God has something completely different in mind. It’s good to plan and dream and think ahead. But we must always be open to God-appointed changes in direction. “Humans plan their course,” King Solomon wrote, “but the Lord establishes their steps” (PROVERBS 16:9). God will never lead us the wrong way. When we trust Him, He will direct our paths (3:5-6). His way is always best.

WHEN WE TRUST OUR PLANS TO GOD, WE’RE READY
TO FOLLOW HIM WHEREVER HE LEADS.
