Night Watches
Bible:Psalm 63
On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night (V.6).

During one summer holiday, I lived and worked on a farm. Everyone there was signed up on the “Night Watch” rota. Night watches meant staying up all night watching out for things like forest fires, intruders or distressed animals—while everyone else slept. At first the night watches were really boring and tiring. But soon they became unique opportunities for me to be still before God, talking with Him, singing praise and thinking about things I had read recently in the Bible King David loved spending time with God and would “earnestly” look to make time with Him (PSALM 63:1), even from his bed and through the “watches of the night” (V.6). This psalm makes it clear that David was troubled. It’s possible he was thinking about his deep sadness over his son Absalom’s rebellion. Yet the night became a time for David to find help, strength and comfort in the “shadow of [God’s] wings” (V.7). Are you going through something that’s keeping you awake at night? Why not use those sleepless times as your own night watches. Look for God, sing to Him, talk with Him and “cling to [him]” (V.8). And from those night watches with God, you’ll be strengthened for the days ahead.
