The speaker at one university graduation ceremony announced that he would be giving millions of pounds to pay for the student fees of the entire year. Their debts were completely removed! One student—with thousands of pounds of debt in student loans—was too overwhelmed to speak! Have you ever owed a debt? It might have been some money you borrowed from a brother or sister. Or maybe you owed your friend a favour after they spent an evening helping you with some homework you just didn’t get. Whatever form they take, we know what it is to be indebted to someone else. But have you ever had the relief of hearing that person say, “It’s fine. You don’t owe me anything.” Effectively they’re saying, “The debt is paid.” After calling Jesus “the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead and the ruler of the kings of the earth,” John talked about His debt-removing work: “To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood” (REVELATION 1:5). This statement is simple but its meaning is huge. It’s the good news that the death of Jesus frees us from the penalty that our sinful actions and attitudes deserve. Jesus cried from the cross, “It is finished!” (JOHN 19:30)—or in other words, “The debt is paid in full!” There is nothing left to pay. Our every sin and rejection of God was emptied into Jesus’ account on the cross, where He took on the full judgement of God for us. Because our debt has been paid, those who trust in Jesus are forgiven and become a part of God’s kingdom family (REVELATION 1:6). This is the best news ever
