GOING GOING GONE

GOING GOING GONE

Bible:Proverbs 23:1-5

Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone (V.5).

The artist Banksy pulled off another clever stunt. His painting Girl with Balloon sold for one million pounds at an auction house in London. Moments after the auctioneer yelled “Sold,” an alarm sounded and the painting slipped halfway through a shredder mounted inside the bottom of the frame. Banksy tweeted a picture of bidders gasping at his ruined masterpiece, with the words, “Going, going, gone.” Banksy loved pulling one over on the rich people at the auction, but he
didn’t need to bother. Money pulls plenty of pranks itself. God says, “Do not wear yourself out to get rich . . . Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle” (PROVERBS 23:4-5). It may feel good to have money to spend, but it’s one of the least secure things in this world. Maybe your parents give you a bit of money each month. Maybe you’ve got a weekend job. Whatever one or two ways we get money, there are loads of ways to lose it. We buy stuff we then regret; people can steal our money; we can easily misplace it; our phone contract suddenly increases and takes yet more money . . . Money is just one of the things of this world that is always going, going, gone. So what should we do? God tells us a few verses later: “Always be zealous for the fear of the Lord. There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off” (VV.17-18). The only real security is found in Jesus; He alone keeps us safe forever and promises us a certain future.

ONLY JESUS CAN OFFER US A SECURE FUTURE.
