Ten thousand hours. That’s how long one expert thinks it takes to become really good at a new skill. Even the best singers, footballers and writers weren’t just born talented. They had to work hard and spend many hours getting as good as they are at what they do. As strange as it might seem, we need a similar mentality when it comes to learning to live in the power of the Holy Spirit. In Galatians, Paul encouraged the church to be set apart for God. But Paul explained that this wouldn’t just happen by obeying a set of rules. Instead we’re to “walk” with the Holy Spirit
(GALATIANS 5:16). The Greek word that Paul uses for “walk” literally means to walk around and around something. So for Paul, walking with the Spirit meant journeying with the Spirit each day—it’s not just a one-time experience of His power. Just like a great singer has to spend time every day practising to be that good, if we want to be “in step with the Spirit” (V.25) we need to spend time with Him. It isn’t something that ‘just happens’. Let’s look to be filled with the Spirit each day, giving space to read the Bible and talk with God. As we allow ourselves this time with Him, He will guide us, strengthen us and change us. And as we’re “led by the Spirit” in this way (V.18), we’ll become better at hearing His voice and following His leading.
WALKING WITH THE SPIRIT IS A LIFE-LONG JOURNEY.
