Curtained off
Bible:Hebrews 10:19-25
Since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,
by a new and living way . . . let us draw near to God (VV.19,22).

As my flight reached cruising speed, the flight attendant pulled back the curtain that hid business class, and I was given a clear reminder of the big differences between areas on aeroplanes. Some travellers get to board first, enjoying premium seating with extra legroom and personalised service. The curtain was a reminder of my separation from those perks. Lots of things offer better service to people who can pay more, like music streaming services. If you pay, you don’t get adverts. If you don’t pay—it feels like that’s all you listen to! The temple in Jerusalem had different distinctions too. Non-Jewish people (gentiles) were only allowed to worship in the outer court. Next came the women’s court, and even further in was an area for the Jewish men. Finally, the
inner room was called the Holy of Holies. This was only accessible to one priest each year who would enter the very presence of God. And it was hidden behind a thick curtain (HEBREWS 9:1-10). Thankfully this separation no longer exists. Jesus has completely removed any barriers that might stop anyone coming to God for themselves—even our sin (10:17). Just as the temple curtain was torn in two at the moment of Jesus’ death (MATTHEW 27:52), His crucified body has torn away all obstacles to God’s presence. The law contained many legitimate barriers to God because of our sin. Now there is no barrier that need separate any Christian from living confidently in the presence of God—in His very throne room (HEBREWS 4:16).
