We are Seen

Bible: Genesis 16:7-16

She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees
me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me” (V.13).

Until a couple of years ago The Experience Project was one of the largest online communities where tens of millions of people simply shared things they had been through in life. Many were raw and painful. As I looked through some of the stories, I thought about how we all want someone to see—to really understand—the stuff we’re going through. In Genesis, the story of a young servant girl shows just how important it is to be seen and known. Hagar was an Egyptian slave girl in Abram’s camp—later called Abraham (SEE GENESIS 12:16; 16:1). When Abram’s wife Sarai was unable to have a baby, she told Abram to have a child with Hagar—a normal practice back then, even though it seems odd to us today. But when Hagar got pregnant, things got tense,
until Hagar ran away into the wilderness to escape Sarai’s abuse (16:1-6). But Hagar’s situation—pregnant and alone in a hot, endless desert—didn’t go unnoticed. After “the angel of the Lord” met with Hagar (VV.7-12), she said, “You are the God who sees me” (V.13). God sees more than just the facts. He gets how we feel, who we are and what we’re going through. We see this in Jesus as well, who, “when he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless” (MATTHEW 9:36). Hagar met a God who understood. The One who saw and understood Hagar’s pain sees ours as well (HEBREWS 4:15-16). Knowing that God completely gets the stuff we’re going through helps make it just a little more bearable

GOD FEELS OUR PAIN AS IF IT WERE HIS OWN.
