The Envelope

Bible: Bible: Matthew 6:19-2

Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not
destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal (V.20).

We were on the way home from our holiday when I found it. We were taking a break in a motorway services when I noticed a brown envelope lying on the ground. I picked it up and flicked it open. I nearly dropped it again in surprise! There was a hundred pounds inside! One hundred pounds that someone had lost. They were probably frantically searching for it. We gave our house phone number to the staff in the services in case anyone came back looking for it. But no one ever called. Someone had that money and then lost it. “Treasures on earth” are often
like that (MATTHEW 6:19). They can be lost, stolen or wasted. So much of the stuff we own and money we have is not really in our control. All it takes is for our phone provider to up our contract payments—and suddenly we’ve got a lot less “treasure”! That’s why Jesus told us, “store up for yourselves treasure in heaven” (V.20). The heavenly treasure we have in Jesus is our right relationship with God and the promise of eternal life. It can’t be taken away from us or lost—it is kept safe by Him (JOHN 10:28-29). And we build up our “treasure in heaven” as we grow “rich in good deeds” (1 TIMOTHY 6:18) or “rich in faith” (JAMES 2:5)—trusting God more and more, looking out for others and sharing Jesus where we can. Let’s look to build up our treasure in heaven, not on earth.

WHEN JESUS IS OUR TREASURE, WE WILL HAVE
EVERYTHING WE NEED.
