Bible: Mark 2:13-17

I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners (V.17).

Reading

Health workers in one part of the world are taking medical care to the streets to help homeless people who are suffering from addictions. The project started because the amount of homeless people there was on the rise, along with an increase in drug use. Normally doctors wait for patients to come to them. But by taking medicine out to the streets, homeless people don’t have to worry about making appointments or getting themselves to the hospital. The willingness of this medical team to go to those in need reminds me of the way Jesus came to us in our need. Jesus always looked for the people who the proud religious leaders were quick to ignore. He ate with “sinners and tax collectors” (MARK 2:16)—the lowest, most hated people in ancient Israel. When asked why He would do that, Jesus replied, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick” (V.17). Jesus didn’t come for the people who think they’ve got it all together; He came to help, heal and save the people who’ve made a real mess of things and know they need rescuing! When we realise that we’re all ‘sick’ and in need of a doctor (ROMANS 3:10), we can better understand Jesus’s willingness to eat with the “sinners and tax collectors”—people just like us. Now that we have trusted Jesus, we’re a bit like those health workers. We’re Jesus’ street team, taking His saving love to others who need to be rescued—other people just like us!

ALL OF US ARE “SICK” AND IN NEED OF RESCUE—
THAT’S WHY JESUS CAME
