Bible: Deuteronomy 6:1-9
These commandments . . . are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children (VV.6-7).

A boy was having a hard time at school. So his dad began to teach him to pray each morning before school. While the prayers weren’t the same words every day, his dad suggested some things he could pray regularly, to help give him a God-centred view for the day ahead: “Thank You God for waking me up today. I am going to school so I can learn . . . and to be the leader that You have created me to be.” In a way, by teaching his son to pray like that, the dad is helping him to know and live by God’s ways. It is similar to what God commanded His people when He was leading them through the desert: “These commandments . . . are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children” (DEUTERONOMY 6:6-7). After wandering in the wilderness for forty years, the next generation of Israelites was about to enter the Promised Land. God knew it would not be easy for them to succeed—unless they kept their focus on Him. And so, through Moses, He told them to remember His words and to obey Him—and to help their children to know and love God by talking about His ways and His words “when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up” (V.7). Talking with God is a great way to start each day. It allows us to trust the day, and its lessons, to Him. And it means we’ll be more ready to live by His ways, thank Him for His provision and be looking for what He’s doing in our lives.
