“Why are the statues’ noses broken?” That’s the number one question visitors ask at the Ancient Egyptian part of one museum. The broken noses can’t be blamed on normal wear and tear; even two dimensional painted figures are missing noses. One expert explains that the statues and paintings must have been attacked, and the noses deliberately removed. Enemies meant to kill Ancient Egypt’s gods. It’s as if they were playing a game of ‘got your nose’ with them. Invading armies broke off the noses of these fake gods so they couldn’t breathe. Really? That’s all it took? With gods like this, Pharaoh should have known he was in trouble. Yes, he had an army and led a powerful nation. Whereas God’s people were just worn-out slaves being led by a fugitive called Moses. But Israel had the living God, and Pharaoh’s gods were pretenders. Ten plagues later, their imaginary lives were over (EXODUS 7-11). Israel were to celebrate their rescue from Egypt with the yearly Festival of Unleavened Bread. In this festival, they would eat bread without yeast for a week (EXODUS 12:17-20). Yeast symbolised sin, and God wanted his people to remember their rescued lives belong entirely to Him. Our God says to idols, “Got your nose,” and to us, His people, “Got your life.” Choose the God who gives you breath, and know the confidence of belonging to Him.
