We’re all affected by depression at some point, either because we’re going through it or someone close to us is. Some common signs and symptoms of depression include hopelessness, a loss of interest in life, struggling to engage with things and feeling worthless and helpless. Alongside depression, many of us battle suicidal thoughts during our darkest days. But isn’t Jesus meant to fix this kind of stuff in our lives? Knowing Jesus doesn’t change the fact that many of us will still struggle to some extent with depression, mental and emotional issues, and suicidal thoughts. In 1 Kings 19, Elijah was so physically and emotionally exhausted that he asked God to take his life. Although that’s not suicide, he was clearly feeling helpless and like his life was too hard. But God brought Elijah out of his depression. He strengthened him with food and sleep, listened to his complaint, reassured him in a still, small voice—and gave him new work to do. Are you feeling hopeless and desperate today? Do things feel too hard for you to handle? Just as God was ready to meet Elijah’s needs, He is ready to meet yours. Realising we haven’t got what it takes is no reason to give up—it shows us our reality; we can’t do life without God (JOHN 15:5).

WHEN WE GET TO THE END OF OUR STRENGTH,
WE’RE READY TO RELY ON GOD’S.
