Lined up to love

Jesus stopped and said, “Call him” (V.49).

A guy wanted to end his life by jumping from a bridge onto the motorway below. So the police stopped some lorries and trucks, and asked the drivers to help. The lorry drivers stopped and lined up their lorries under the overpass to shorten the guy’s fall if he jumped. This gave the police time to help the man, and the situation thankfully ended without anyone getting hurt. Each of the thirteen drivers had a responsibility to deliver their cargo, yet they stopped to help save a man’s life. About two thousand years ago, on a different kind of road, another guy needed help. Blind Bartimaeus heard about Jesus, believed He could give him his sight back and shouted for mercy (MARK 10:46-52). I’ve always been amazed at this passage because Jesus—though He walked towards Jerusalem that day knowing an unfair trial and crucifixion awaited Him—stopped. Jesus arguably had “more important” things to do—the most important thing in all of history—
offering Himself as a sacrifice for Bartimaeus and all who would trust in Him. Yet He stopped and showed love and kindness to the man, giving him sight. As we walk the roads of life, we’ll become aware of the needs of those in our path. We may have many important things to do and places to be. Yet as we do life, we should always ask ourselves whether we’re keeping our eyes open for the people who need help. And are we prepared to stop for them? Dear God, please use us to care for others!
