How to get rich
Bible:Luke 12:13-21
Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an
abundance of possessions (V.15).

I find it interesting that Jesus taught more about money than anything else. And He wasn’t trying to get loads of donations. As far as we know, He never asked for money from anyone. The reason He taught about it is that nothing gets in the way of our relationship with Jesus like money does. We get distracted really easily wishing we had more stuff—and so wishing we had the money to get it. The ‘need’ for more stuff and money can tempt us to normalise stealing or simply fill our heads with daydreams about it. And suddenly Jesus doesn’t seem like such an important part of our lives . . . Just think of the guy who asked Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me” (LUKE 12:13). Amazing! He had an opportunity to ‘go deep’ with Jesus, but instead he wanted deep pockets. Jesus answered: “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions” (V.15). He then went on to tell the story of a rich man who was seemed to be wildly successful—having so many crops that he had to keep building bigger barns. But in God’s eyes he was a “fool” (V.20). Not because he was rich, but because he was “not rich towards God” (V.21). You’ll hear a lot of advice about how to become rich, famous and successful. But only Jesus tells it to us straight. It’s not about the money or what we have. It’s about the richness of our relationship with Him. If we have Him, we have it all. If we don’t have Him, we’ll lose it all.
