Why me?
Bible:Job 7:17-21
Why have you made me your target? Have I become a burden to you? (V.20).
Reading
The Book of Odds says that one in a million people are struck by lightning. One in 25,000 suffer a medical condition called “broken heart syndrome” when they face a terrible shock or loss. Page after page in this book gives us such stats. They pile up without explanation. What if we’re the one? Job found himself as a “one”. God Himself talked about Job, saying: “There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil” (JOB 1:8). Yet Job was chosen to suffer a series of losses that defied all odds (JOB 1-2). Of all people on earth, Job had reason to demand an answer. We can see it ourselves as we read of his struggles and his cries of, “Why me?” Job’s story helps us to think about the unexplained pain and evil in our world; including our own struggles. After Job’s friends gave him bad advice (SEE 6:21 AND 42:7) “the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm” (38:1). But He didn’t give Job answers to why he had suffered. Instead He said, “Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me” (V.3). Through God’s questions, Job realised just how awesome God truly is. God took Job’s attention away from his pain (real and devastating as it was) and put it back on the King of the universe who loved him. Job’s response? “Now my eyes have seen you” (42:5). We may not get an answer to “Why me?” when we’re struggling or things are really hard. But through reading the Bible we too can ‘see’ God and be strengthened for the things we have to grow through.
