The hill of sacrifice
Bible:Genesis 22:1-19
Reading
God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain that I will show you” (V.2).
Do your parents have to wake you up in the morning to get you to school on time? When I read today’s story about Abraham, I wonder if waking Isaac was part of his routine—and how different it must have been on this particular day. Abraham had waited for this promised child for over twenty years. Yet now God said to Abraham, “Sacrifice [Isaac] as a burnt offering” (GENESIS 22:2)! What? How must Abraham have felt?! Yet, despite his questions, confusion and pain, Abraham trusted God’s words more than anything else. God had said Isaac was the promised child and the first of a great nation—so somehow Abraham knew He’d keep His promise. Abraham bound his son and laid him on an altar, but then God stepped in and provided another sacrifice (VV.11-14)! Nearly two thousand years later, God provided again—the final sacrifice—
His own Son. Think of how painful it must have been for God to watch His Son suffer and die, His only Son who He loved! And He went through all of that because He loves you and wanted to save you. If you wonder whether you are loved by God, look to Jesus on the cross and
see the price He paid for you.
GOD HAS ALREADY PROVEN HIS LOVE FOR YOU.
