The cockeyed squid

The cockeyed squid

Bible:Colossians 3:1-4

Reading

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly thing (V.2).

The cockeyed squid lives in the ocean’s ‘twilight zone’ where sunlight barely filters through the deep, dark waters. The squid got its nickname from its two extremely different eyes: the left eye develops over time to become considerably larger than the right—almost twice as big. Scientists studying the squid have worked out that it uses its right eye, the smaller one, to look down
into the darker depths. The larger, left eye, gazes upward, towards the sunlight. The squid is a surprising image of what it means to live in our world as Christians. We, like the squid, keep one eye on what’s going on around us, while also keeping one eye fixed ‘upwards’ on the future certainty we wait for as people who “have been raised with Christ” (COLOSSIANS 3:1). In Paul’s letter to the Colossians, he is clear that we should “set [our] minds on things above” because
our lives are “hidden with Christ in God” (VV.2-3). We live on earth, but we know “our citizenship is in heaven” (PHILIPPIANS 3:20). We belong in heaven and we “eagerly” wait for Jesus to take us there (V.20). But we also need to be involved in what’s going on here and now, helping others to
find their true identity in Jesus and to also look ahead to the future God has promised. We may not have yet fully grasped what it means to be alive in Jesus, but as we look at “things above”, our eyes will begin to see it more and more.

WE ALWAYS HAVE ONE EYE ON HEAVEN.
