God’s good anger

God’s good anger

Bible:Nahum 1

Reading

The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord takes vengeance and is filled
with wrath . . . The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble (VV.2,7).

One guy became an atheist after he read the words of Jesus about hell. He apparently wanted a God who would never become angry or punish anyone. That guy definitely wouldn’t like today’s Bible reading, which talks about God as One who “is a jealous and avenging God” (NAHUM 1:2). Personally, I would have trouble believing in a God who never became angry and didn’t punish sin, evil and the terrible things in our world. Such a God would not be a good God. What would you think, for example, of a witness to a brutal murder who felt no emotion and didn’t care about what they saw? Would you think they were good? No way! God allows us to make our own choices, and usually doesn’t stop us from doing whatever we want, right or wrong, good or bad, God-centred or selfish. But He does hold us responsible for the choices we make, and He will judge us. In Nahum’s day, the Ninevites were a cruel, violent people who did unbelievably gross things. But Nahum promised God’s people that God saw the wickedness of the Ninevites, was angered by it and would justly punish them. I’m thankful that God is good. And that His anger and judgements are good. It gives me reason to trust Him to keep all His promises, and it reminds me that He will right all the wrongs of history when Jesus returns

GOD’S ANGER IS ALWAYS GOOD AND HOLY.
