Alert circles

Alert circles

Bible:Hebrews 10:19-25

Reading

Encourage one another and build each other up (1 THESSALONIANS 5:11).

African gazelles instinctively make ‘alert circles’ while they rest. They gather in groups with each animal facing outward in a slightly different direction. This allows them to fully see the horizon that surrounds them so they can warn each other as soon as they see any dangers coming from any direction. Instead of looking out just for themselves, the gazelles take care of one another. This is also God’s plan for Christians. The Bible tells us, “Let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together” (HEBREWS 10:24-25).
Christians were never meant to go it alone. Together we are stronger. We are able to “[encourage] one another” (V.25), to “comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God” (2 CORINTHIANS 1:4) and to help each other stay alert to the dangers, lies and temptations from our enemy the devil, who “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 PETER 5:8). Being in church is about more than survival. It is to make us like Jesus: loving and clear examples of God in this world. And we are in this together, looking forward confidently to the day when Jesus returns. All of us need encouragement, and God gives us what we need to help each other stay close to Him.
