PERFECT LOVE
Bible: 1 John 4:15-18
Reading
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment (V.18).
So many Christians struggle with self-doubt, guilt and shame. They think they must do something to make God love them more. Yet we’re told: “This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgement: in this world we are like Jesus” (1 JOHN 4:17). In other words, we have the same confidence that Jesus had on earth, knowing that the Father loves us with perfect love.
Because Jesus rescued us through His death and resurrection, all judgement for sin is now completed for us. There is no judgement left for Christians to face (ROMANS 8:1)—Jesus took it all! This is what gives us joy and confidence, removing our anxiety about meeting God face to face. “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment” (1 JOHN 4:18). But we know our punishment is already over!
We’re forgiven for all our sins, held tightly by God’s love and promised a place in His home forever—not because of anything we have done but because He has done everything for us. “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as [a complete and perfect] sacrifice for our sins”
(V.10). That’s perfect love!
WE WON’T FEAR GOD’S JUDGEMENT WHEN WE KNOW HIS FORGIVENESS.
