Jesus Saves

Bible: Romans 4:1-8

Reading

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost (LUKE 19:10).

If a friend of yours, who couldn’t swim, fell into deep water, what would you do? Obviously you’d want to help rescue them. But where do you start?
You could throw a book into the water next to them called “Five Easy Swimming Lessons”. Or you could just shout encouragements. Or you could jump in the water and start swimming next to them, saying, “Just copy me!” Okay, none of these are very good ideas . . .

The point is this: a drowning person doesn’t need a book, a lesson or motivation. They need a saviour; someone who can get to them, pull them to safety and rescue them!

This is exactly what it’s like for each of us if we don’t know Jesus for ourselves. The Bible says “all have sinned” (ROMANS 3:23) and “the wages of sin is death” (6:23). Everyone born into this world fails to meet God’s perfect standards, so we ‘earn’ death. We cannot fix ourselves by reading books about religion, by trying harder to do good stuff or by following good examples. Even the best of us don’t love God as we should. Only Jesus rescues us from drowning in sin.

The Bible teaches us the gospel (which literally means “good news”) that Jesus “came to seek and to save the lost” (LUKE 19:10). He rescues all who trust in Him. Just as a drowning person must stop struggling and relax in the arms of their rescuer, we too must trust in Jesus, realising we can’t rescue ourselves.

THANK YJESUS IS THE ONLY ONE WHO
RESCUES US FROM SIN AND ITS PUNISHMENT.
