Good Riddance Day
Bible: Psalm 103:1-12
Reading
As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions
from us (V.12).
Have you ever heard of Good Riddance Day? It’s slowly starting to get more attention around the world. It’s meant to be the day at the end of the year when you say goodbye to the bad stuff you’ve been through. The idea is that you write down any embarrassing, upsetting or painful stuff
from the past year—and then you shred them or bin them or smash them to pieces in whatever way suits you! The writer of Psalm 103 takes this idea further. More than just saying “goodbye and good riddance” to bad memories, God says good riddance to our sins. In trying to help us understand God’s massive love for us, the psalm writer compared this huge love to the distance between heaven and earth (PSALM 103:11). Then he talked about God’s forgiveness in a similar way: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our [sins] from us” (V.12). God’s love and forgiveness are infinite and complete. He has freed us from the power of our sin and selfishness. Why not make today, the last day in this Our Daily Bread Youth Edition, a Good Riddance Day! Talk to God about all the stuff that’s happened this year and, with Him, chuck out the regrets and shameful stuff. You don’t need to carry it any further—Jesus paid for it all in full. “You will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea” (MICAH 7:19).
THANK YOU, FATHER, THAT EVERY DAY
